I’m paranoid to buy used baby furniture. Is there any way I can find a compromise?
I’m honestly paranoid… I had a family member who had a FILTHY house where her child smeared feces all over furniture, objects, etc.. since seeing all that, I’m terrified to buy used baby furniture… What if the home the furniture is coming from is just as filthy as my family members? Germ-a-phobe mom’s: how did you deal with the expense, or compromise of buying used baby furniture?

Why not just buy new baby furniture? Just wait around, there will be a good deal on something. That’s how I got a brand new $ 600 set (3-in-1 crib, dresser and change table) all for $ 250 taxes in.

If I was in your shoes I would take every piece of used furniture I bought and thoroughly disinfect it first, with stuff that is safe for the baby of course. Disinfecting baby wipes and Lysol would probably work.

If you really don’t have the funds to buy new, invest in a cleaning product that sanitizes. I think home depot have a good product that kills almost everything from AIDS to tuberculosis.

The only furniture you have to really have is a crib, and a changing table would be very nice too.

The one I have was less than $ 200 and looks really nice…I think it is called “Lauren”

Actually, I got two of them, because I’m having twins. Thankfully a good friend bought one and my MIL bought the other, plus both mattresses.

Why not register for a crib and see if someone gets it for you? If not, you can buy a brand new one pretty inexpensively. Changing tables run as low as about $ 50.

How do you feel about furniture from a consignment store? In theory, they clean everything up before selling.

But, you are familiar with how to clean and sanitize furniture, aren’t you?

If you really want to buy new, that’s awesome. See what “necessities” are just marketing and skip those, and then shop for the rest of your pieces in the actual furniture section rather than Baby section. Ikea has some great prices.

We have twins and did end up going with second-hand cribs. My advice would be to check for recalls to be safe, check out the furniture before paying for it and buy only hardwood furniture which can be cleaned and sanitized.

We went with used cribs but bought new mattresses and changing pads.

We treated our cribs the same way we clean our hardwood floors by cleaning with a solution of water and vinegar which will sanitize and not be harmful to the baby - here is a link:

well since i’m only 22 and still in college, we had to compromise. we got a lot of clothes at garage sales and washed them a few times before wearing them. and toys and books my mom would sanitize them either in bleach water and/or those sani wipes. as for furniture… we got the car seat and crib set/mattress/sheets new. i’m a germaphobe too but he hasn’t gotten sick yet!

I can understand your reaction. My suggestion is to buy used only that which you can throw into a bleach/water bath.

My resistance to getting some stuff used is due to getting roaches at an apartment. I moved in the middle of winter when it was below zero, so leaving my stuff outside killed all the varmints, but that would have grossed me out with a mattress knowing there might be bugs in it (I had a waterbed at the time).

My suggestion is to save money on clothes by buying those mostly used. Purchase other stuff that isn’t necessarily baby furniture. Just buy a regular chest instead of something matching. Buy with regard for 10 years instead of 2-3. For instance, I have a nice dresser that is exactly the right height as a changing table, but can be used right through adulthood. I personally wouldn’t buy a convertible crib - I’d just sell it when done and buy a twin bed for the child.

Honestly, the only baby furniture you might need is a bed and a mattress.

I personally am not buying a crib because I’m using a 100 year old cradle made by my great-grandfather. It’s gone through 25 babies and fits them until about 18 months or so old. At that point, babies can be moved to bigger bed.

I bought cheap dressers from Kmart & man are they cheap, but they do their job. A friend gave us a changing table. You can put your own pad on the changing table & sanitize the table. You’ll see your child doesn’t come in contact with anything other than the pad on the changing table. My husband’s Grandmother bought us a beautiful expensive crib. & we never used it. Toys r us has cribs for like $ 120. The only thing I wouldn’t buy used is a crib. Other than that, my child barely has contact with the other things. If you don’t want a used changing table, buy a pack n play with a changing table & bassinet built in. You can kill 3 birds with one stone.

i dont buy used baby things for that reason and you really have no idea where they came from or what kind of abuse theyve gone through. just because something looks like its in good shape doesnt mean it is.

you can get cribs at walmart for pretty cheap (under $ 200)

dont compromise on safety and just buy everything new.

Clorox makes a sanitizing spray what’s safe to use around children and pets. I’d suggest that, or even a bleach solution would work. That’ll kill the germs :)
You can buy furniture pretty cheaply at Wal Mart, perhaps try that! A convertible crib will save you money in the long run because it’ll turn into a toddler bed and then either a twin bed or full sized bed.

You can always repaint and re upholster things?? I’d assume the only place poo could be smeared would be on the crib while the baby was unattended?

you could buy a pack and play, I know some people on a budget just use that as the bassinet, crib, and changing table forever. There less expensive than all of the different pieces. Also try looking at a Sams Club or Costco type store for furniture, you can also price and comparison shop elsewhere.

If thats still too expensive, buy from people you know are clean, such as doctors, nurses, etc…
